What is Aroma Phyto Studio?
Aroma Phyto Studio is an open reference resource for evidence-informed knowledge on medicinal plants and plant extracts.
The Studio connects medicinal plants, extracts, molecules, isomers, toxicity data, and scientific publications, and lets users navigate freely from one to another.
The resource is open: free consultation, no registration or paywall, and content reusable under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license.
The Studio follows the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), a recognized standard for open scientific resources. In practice, every resource carries a stable identifier, Schema.org metadata, and a documented API endpoint. Content is therefore readable both by human readers and by third-party software, which makes it easier to cite, integrate, and reuse.
What does the Studio bring that you won’t find elsewhere?
Three complementary views of an extract’s composition
The Studio offers three graphical representations of a single extract: classic molecular composition, isomeric composition, and a combined molecules + isomers view. The latter two are rare in existing resources and reveal the actual stereochemistry of a sample.
From plant to extract, without detour
Most resources keep botany on one side and chemistry on the other. The Studio links each species directly to its documented extracts, allowing one-click navigation from a botanical page to the composition of an essential oil, hydrolat, or CO2 extract.
Direct links to reference databases
Each page links in one click to PubMed, PubChem, POWO, and CrossRef. The Studio does not lock its readers within its own perimeter: it opens out toward the public scientific sources that the research community uses every day.
Toxicity qualified on three axes
The Studio does not simply assign a raw toxicity level. Each evaluation is qualified simultaneously by its severity (GHS and IFRA scales), the quality of the evidence (OCEBM and GRADE), and an explicit confidence level. This methodology, uncommon in aroma-phytotherapy, makes every assertion both readable and contestable.
An unbroken taxonomic chain
Family, genus, species, extract, molecule, isomer: the Studio models the full chain, with no gap or discontinuity between botany and chemistry. This continuity, absent from currently available resources, allows free navigation from one level to another.
Stable identifiers, citable for the long term
Every page carries an APS-ID identifier designed to remain valid over time, regardless of internal renaming or restructuring. A reference cited in an article or training course today will still resolve tomorrow.
Free consultation, open integration
The Studio is consulted directly in any web browser, through an interface maintained in French and English. Access is free, with no registration required.
For websites, applications, or professional tools that wish to draw on the Studio’s data, a public REST API is available under /api/v1. It opens the content to any third-party service, with no audience restriction, with per-key rate limiting and a strict CORS policy. Public endpoints cover languages, species, extracts, extract types, olfactory families, genera, and botanical families. A resolve endpoint allows APS-ID short URLs to work without authentication. A PHP SDK and a WordPress plugin are under development to support integration.
Open license and commercial reuse
Commercial reuse of content
Commercial use of the Aroma Phyto Studio content is authorized under the international CC BY-SA 4.0 license, including reuse of data exported from the Studio in commercial products and services, provided the license requirements are met (attribution and share-alike).
In practical terms, this means that:
- The content or data of the Studio may be integrated into commercial products, services, educational materials, software, or publications.
- Appropriate attribution must be provided, including a reference to Aroma Phyto Studio, a link to the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, and an indication of any modifications made.
- If the content or data is adapted, supplemented, or further developed, the resulting contributions must be distributed under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 license, without adding legal or technical restrictions that would limit reuse by third parties.
Aroma Phyto Studio is the sole authoritative source for the data displayed. Any derivative version constitutes an independent work and reflects neither the positions nor the standards of the Studio.
Commercial use of the API is governed by the Terms of Service, which set out the conditions of API access, rate limits, and acceptable use of the platform. Operating the API itself as a commercial service (for example, large-scale or production integrations, service-level agreements, or custom data services) requires a separate API Agreement. Organizations interested in such use are invited to get in touch in order to put an appropriate API Agreement in place before deploying such integrations.
B2b services
Alongside the open content, Aroma Phyto Studio may offer services to organizations, such as higher-volume API access, specialized tools, integrations, or tailored support. These services contribute to funding the hosting, maintenance, and long-term development of the Studio, without altering the open license applied to contributions. In other words, the content remains open and reusable by all, while the Studio sustains itself through optional paid services built around that open content.
Low-carbon hosting
The Studio runs on green energy. Hosting is provided by Combell, an operator certified in the Green Web Foundation’s Green Web Dataset. Supporting evidence is documented at the level of the Team.blue group (owner of the Combell brand) and the Digital Realty data center.
An educational initiative
Aroma Phyto Studio is an independent educational initiative, in the service of professionals working with medicinal plants and their extracts.
